Tuning & Repairing

"Fox Music House only recommends the best piano technicians and are proud to get your instrument sounding its best. We offer standard, pitch raise, as well as concert/event tunings. A standard piano tuning is our most common request. Pitch raises can be done on request. A piano will drop in pitch if not regularly serviced and will require subsequent tunings to stabilize.

We tune pianos both in-store or at your home. Our tuners take great pride in what they do, and can make an appointment that will be convenient to your schedule. Tuning usually takes about 1-2 hours. If your piano has not been tuned in several years, then multiple tuning sessions may be required to bring it back up to pitch.

About Tuning

We recommend getting your piano tuned twice a year to keep it in proper working order. This makes for quicker and more accurate tunings. Tuning your piano depends on your piano's conditions and your use of the piano. If you use it in an institutional setting you'll want to tune it more often. Your ear plays a factor into it, but don't be fooled, a lot of people will say "the piano sounds fine" when in reality the piano is wildly out of tune. Your sensibility in how your piano sounds and feels to you will determine how often you will want it tuned. Try and remember the feeling of a freshly tuned piano versus how it felt beforehand. You will want to keep that feeling of the piano in tune but you will be tricked by your ear as the piano slowly goes out of tune and your ears get used to that sound.

Pianos are marvelous instruments and have powerful sound. When played separately your piano may sound fine, however concert pitch is crucial to early musicians and any accompaniment.

Pianos go out of tune, it will happen. The piano strings are pulled so tightly that they want to release and that can be anywhere from 18 to 30 tons of pressure across the piano. Humidity in South Carolina plays a huge role as well, especially if you are near the ocean. Something simple as opening doors will affect your piano. The placement of your piano in your home will affect the tuning stability and longevity of your piano as well. Things that can affect your piano for example are air vents and direct sunlight from windows. The piano is made of wood and metal. The wood absorbs moisture while the metal stays in the same place which causes movement. Movement in the pins and strings as well as the action. With all this movement we do need to regulate the piano every now and then. We can handle all of these different scenarios and our technicians can quote regulation and any other repairs on site.
